Leave Warm Voice Mail

By Marty Nemko

When leaving voice mail for a prospective employer, don't sound like the typical up-tight job seeker, for example, "I'm seeking a position...". Warmly tell your human story. For example, "Hi, this is Mark Johnson. I wrote you last week because your firm specializes in highways. I'm the landscape architect who has worked on one highway project and would love to do more. I'd really appreciate a return call. Even if you don't have an opening, perhaps you could turn me in the right direction. My phone number is (insert number). Best times to reach me are: (insert). Thanks so much."
